Thirty-Five

GEORG AND BROGAN moved fast as they rounded the BMW and bypassed the tall gate that led to the rear of the house. Once at the side of the property and out of sight of any windows, Brogan indicated for Georg to wait.

He did as instructed: this was the Englishman’s field of expertise, and Georg would follow whatever practical instructions he was given. At least to a point.

Brogan was back in less than a minute.

‘They’re both in the kitchen at the back of the house,’ he said. ‘No obvious signs of anyone else in the property. We’ll do a sweep once we’ve secured them, but I don’t think we’ll find anyone.’

‘What makes you think that?’

‘History, Georg. The Nazis were OK with a lot of things that might surprise you, but being gay wasn’t one of them. Klein won’t be pursuing that side of his life in a house full of Odessa back-up.’

Georg understood. The only questions left were practical.

‘So what happens now?’

Brogan handed him a large, all-black knife. It looked like something out of a Hollywood movie: a fearsome weapon with a single, over-exaggerated jagged edge that would look more at home in an eighties Schwarzenegger picture, made all the more sinister by matching the colour of Georg’s gloves. Alongside it were four loose plastic zip-ties and what could only be a ball-gag.

‘You know how to use those?’ Brogan indicated the ties.

‘No idea.’

It took the Englishman seconds to rectify that.

‘And the other thing?’ Georg asked.

‘You’ll work it out. Now listen, when we’re inside I’ll take the lead. You follow orders, without question and without hesitation, understood?’

Georg nodded, already unsure if he would be capable of keeping to the rules Brogan had laid out. But there was nothing to gain by questioning that now: he would have to wait and see how far Brogan pushed it.

‘Let’s go.’

Brogan was moving even as he said the words, giving Georg little opportunity to second-guess or even anticipate what was about to happen. Instead he followed as closely as he could, noting how his nervous energy from yesterday seemed to be missing. He had the adrenalin and his blood was up, but the sense of fear that had driven him on at the hospital? That was entirely absent.

Maybe it’s because I’ve got Scott beside me, he thought. Or maybe I’m getting used to this.

Whatever the answer, Georg was seeing and thinking with total clarity as he followed Brogan through the back door of the house, directly into the kitchen where the two men were standing. He saw that Klein had his back pressed against the marble worktop and his partner was pulled close up against him, their faces centimetres apart.

Brogan didn’t hesitate, heading straight at them at a speed that surprised even Georg.

Klein reacted quickly, his right arm moving for the gun he carried in a holster beneath his suit jacket. It was a hopeless reaction: his lover’s body was too close for him to move with sufficient speed and Georg had warned Brogan about Klein’s weapon.
